ANECDOTES OF
THE GREAT
Once when one of his
secretaries suggested dropping work for a
diversion which he knew would appeal to Woodrow
Wilson, the President replied, “My boss won’t
let me do it.”
“Your boss?” questioned the secretary, wondering
who could be the boss of the chief executive of
the United States.
“Yes, I have a conscience and that is my boss,”
said the President. “It drives me to the task,
and will not let me accept the tempting
invitation.”
Some years ago there was a boy in England who
was facing a great future, in spite of the fact
that his grades were not always what they should
have been.
That boy had an ideal. He had a passionate
admiration for his father, who stood high in
English public life. This lad once said, “The
thing I want most to be is to be as honest and
fearless as my father.”
He had his wish. His name was Winston Churchill.
On one occasion Rabindranath Tagore suggested
that Gandhiji was putting too much stress on
nationalism. “Are you not really building a wall
around India?” asked Tagore. Gandhiji replied,
“If my nationalism is against a single human
interest, I will throw it into the Bay of
Bengal. My nationalism is as broad as humanity.
